Cook named Canada’s top female scientist by Research.com

Two McMaster women scientists have been named to an international ranking of best female scientists.

McMaster University professor Deborah Cook has been named Canada’s top female scientist and 17th worldwide of 1,000 researchers listed by Research.com.

Christine Wilson, Distinguished University Professor of physics and astronomy, ranked 23rd in Canada.

Cook, a Distinguished University Professor of medicine, has received many accolades for her ground-breaking research in the treatment of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). The most recent was the prestigious 2022 Canada Gairdner Wightman Award.

Cook is a McMaster alumna and a critical care physician of more than 30 years for St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. She pioneered improvements in ICU patient management that has both reduced the risk of complications and enhanced end-of-life care for those with fatal conditions.

Wilson’s research is in observational astronomy, with a particular focus on the optical and radio regions.

Cook and Wilson were two of 31 Canadian female researchers that made Research.com’s list.
